Your Female Hair Transplant Journey
From identifying the cause of your hair loss to restoring density, your treatment is shaped around what is right for you.
-
Consultation and diagnosis
Your assessment reviews medical history, scalp, donor area and expectations. If transplantation is unsuitable, this is explained before any plan is made.
-
Donor assessment
Your surgeon checks whether the back and sides of your scalp provide a stable donor supply. This is especially important in cases of diffuse thinning.
-
Treatment planning
If suitable for surgery, your surgeon plans the recipient area, hairline if needed, graft numbers, donor zone, FUE or FUT method, graft distribution, achievable density and long-term strategy.
-
Donor harvesting
The donor area is numbed with local anaesthetic before grafts are carefully harvested using the chosen FUE or FUT technique.
-
Graft preparation
The harvested follicles are prepared for transplantation, with graft types selected based on their final placement.
-
Graft placement
The follicular grafts are placed carefully to blend with existing hair and create balanced, natural looking density.
Find the Right Treatment for Your Hair Loss
Book a consultation with Dr. Asim Shahmalak to discuss your concerns, assess your hair loss and explore whether female hair transplant surgery is suitable for you.
Female Hair Loss Pattern
Female hair loss often presents as diffuse thinning across the top of the scalp rather than a receding hairline. The Ludwig Scale provides a visual guide to common patterns of female hair loss, from early widening of the parting to more advanced diffuse thinning.
During your consultation, your surgeon will assess your pattern of loss, donor hair availability and overall suitability before recommending the most appropriate treatment plan.
Recovery and hair growth timeline
Your results develop gradually, progressing from early healing and shedding to new growth and fuller-looking hair over time.
-
First 48 hours
First 48 hours
The donor and recipient areas may feel tender, with some swelling, redness or tightness. Protect the grafts carefully and follow the sleeping and washing instructions provided by your clinical team.
-
Days 3-10
Early settling
Small crusts may remain around the transplanted grafts while the donor area begins to settle. Avoid scratching, rubbing or picking the recipient area during healing.
-
Weeks 2-8
Healing and shedding
Some transplanted hairs may shed during this stage without meaning the follicles have been lost. Existing hairs around the treated area may also temporarily shed known as shock loss.
-
7-8 Months
Early growth
New transplanted hairs may begin to appear. Early growth can initially look fine, uneven or less dense before gradually developing further.
-
12-18 Months
Maturation and assessment
Further growth becomes increasingly noticeable as density and coverage continue to develop across the treated areas.

Frequently asked questions
A gradual thinning, usually widening from the parting and across the crown, where the hairline is often preserved. It is the most common cause of hair loss in women and tends to be progressive.
It can, when thinning is concentrated in defined areas such as the parting or temples and the donor area is unaffected. Where loss is widespread, medical treatment is often recommended first or instead.
Yes, where there is a stable donor area at the back and sides of the scalp. Not every woman is suitable: diffuse thinning across the whole scalp often means the donor hair is affected too, and your surgeon will say so at assessment.
They share a mechanism but not a pattern. Men typically recede at the temples and crown towards baldness; women more often thin diffusely while keeping a hairline, which is why suitability for surgery differs.
Often yes. A widening parting is one of the more treatable presentations, because grafts can be placed to add density along it, provided the donor area is stable enough to supply them.
Permanent, stable traction-related hair loss may sometimes be suitable.
Ongoing tension must first be addressed, and the recipient area needs to be assessed.
If repeated tension has permanently destroyed follicles and the pattern is stable, transplantation may be considered.
Where the follicles are not permanently damaged, stopping the traction may allow recovery without surgery.
Active telogen effluvium generally requires investigation of the cause rather than immediate transplantation.
Because the shedding may be temporary, surgery may not be appropriate.
