Your Afro Hair Transplant Journey
Afro-textured follicles curve beneath the skin, so every stage is planned around how your hair actually grows.
-
Consultation
Your hair loss pattern, curl pattern, donor area, medical history and expectations are assessed. Any history of traction alopecia or scarring is reviewed, since both affect what can be achieved.
-
Technique selection
Your surgeon plans your FUE technique around follicle shape, donor density and the number of grafts required.
-
Hairline and edge planning
The hairline and edges are designed around your facial proportions and existing growth pattern, and marked with you before anything begins.
-
Donor harvesting
The donor area is numbed with local anaesthetic before the follicles are harvested, with the curve of each follicle taken into account to protect the graft.
-
Graft preparation and placement
Grafts are inspected and prepared, then placed at angles that follow your natural curl so the result blends with the hair around it.
-
Aftercare
Treatment is completed as a day case. You receive instructions covering washing, styling, and avoiding tension on the grafts during early healing.
Surgeon-led Afro Hair Restoration
Dr. Asim Shahmalak has more than 20 years of experience in hair transplantation following an earlier career in general surgery within the NHS.
Afro-textured hair needs a different surgical approach, because the follicle curves beneath the skin and can be damaged during extraction if that curve is not accounted for.
Recovery and hair growth timeline
From early healing to visible new growth, your transplanted hair gradually develops in texture, coverage and density over time.
-
First 72 hours
First 72 hours
The donor and recipient areas may feel tender, with some redness, swelling or sensitivity. Small crusts may form around the grafts, so avoid rubbing, scratching or disturbing the treated area.
-
4-10 Days
Early healing
Continue following your personalised washing instructions as the transplanted area settles and crusts gradually loosen. Avoid hairstyles, hats or accessories that create unnecessary friction or tension on the grafts.
-
Around 1-2 weeks
Continued settling
Most visible signs of early healing continue to improve. Donor area recovery may vary depending on whether your procedure was performed using FUE.
-
Months 3-6
Early new growth
New transplanted hairs may begin to emerge. Early growth can initially appear fine, uneven or less dense before continuing to develop.
-
Months 12-18
Developing density
Growth generally becomes more noticeable as coverage improves. Curl pattern, texture and overall density become easier to assess as the transplanted hairs mature.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. Afro-textured hair transplants well, and its density and coverage per graft can give an excellent result. It needs a surgeon experienced with the texture, because the technique differs from straight hair.
It is more demanding. The follicle curves in a C-shape beneath the skin, so a punch aimed straight down can cut through it. Extraction has to follow that curve, which takes longer and requires more care.
Yes, and it is done routinely, but it requires a surgeon who adjusts punch size and angle for the curve of the follicle. Done without that adjustment, graft damage rates rise sharply.
Potentially, yes.
Suitable patients may have a thinning or receded hairline restored.
The design should complement your facial proportions, natural texture and likely future hair loss.
Not necessarily.
Curl and hair thickness can influence the appearance of coverage, but graft requirements still depend on the size of the recipient area, existing hair, donor supply and desired result.
