Your Beard Transplant Journey
Your treatment is planned around restoring beard coverage, shape and density using suitable donor hair.
-
Consultation
Your facial hair, medical history and donor area are assessed. Your beard goals, donor supply, expected graft numbers, suitable technique, recovery, risks and treatment cost are discussed.
-
Beard and sideburn design
The treatment areas are marked according to your facial proportions and existing hair. This may include the sideburns, cheeks, jawline, chin, goatee, moustache or patchy areas.
-
Donor hair harvesting
The donor area is numbed with local anaesthetic before follicles are harvested using FUE technique.
-
Graft Preparation
The extracted follicles are prepared for transplantation. Their size, thickness and natural characteristics are considered to determine suitable placement within the beard, sideburns or scalp.
-
Precise Graft Placement
For beard and sideburn restoration, grafts are placed to match natural hair growth. For beard-to-scalp FUE, follicles are positioned to blend with existing scalp hair.
-
Aftercare
Beard transplantation is usually completed as a day-case procedure. You receive instructions on protecting the grafts & caring for the donor areas during recovery.
Surgeon-led Facial Hair Restoration
Dr. Asim Shahmalak has worked in hair transplantation for more than 20 years following an earlier career in general surgery within the NHS.
He has also carried out reconstructive facial hair work for people affected by serious burns and acid attacks.
Beard Transplant Recovery and Growth Timeline
Your transplanted beard develops gradually from early healing to visible growth and final maturation.
-
First 48 hours
First 48 hours
The treated area may appear red, swollen or sensitive. Small crusts can form around the grafts. Avoid touching, rubbing or scratching the area.
-
7-10 days
Early healing
Crusts or scabs may remain while the recipient area heals. Follow your washing and aftercare instructions carefully. Around a week away from work may be helpful where practical.
-
Weeks 2-8
Shedding phase
Some transplanted hairs may shed during this period. This is a normal part of the transplant cycle and does not mean the follicles are lost.
-
Months 3-4
Early new growth
Early new growth may begin to appear. Hair can initially look fine, uneven or incomplete.
-
Months 6-9
Developing density
Further growth becomes more noticeable as additional follicles become active. Beard texture, coverage and density become easier to assess.
-
Months 9-12+
Maturing result
The beard continues to mature and develop. Growth rates vary, so your clinical team will advise when the final result can reasonably be assessed.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. The follicles are taken from an area of the scalp that is not affected by pattern hair loss, so once they have settled into the face they continue to grow. They behave like scalp hair, so the beard needs trimming as it grows.
Usually the back of the scalp, where the hair is a close match for facial hair in thickness and growth. Your surgeon assesses the donor area at consultation to confirm there is enough suitable hair.
Typically somewhere between 1,000 and 2,000, though it depends entirely on how much of the beard is being restored and the density you want. A patchy area needs far fewer than a full beard.
Yes. Treatment can be limited to the sideburns alone, or to any single area such as the cheeks, jawline, chin or moustache. The areas to be treated are marked out with you at consultation.
Potentially, yes.
If you have healthy surrounding facial hair but stable areas that remain sparse, grafts can be placed into the gaps to improve continuity and density.
Beard-to-scalp FUE may be suitable if you have limited scalp donor hair but sufficient healthy beard hair for transplantation. Your surgeon will assess your donor hair, scalp condition and treatment goals to determine your suitability.
