Your FUT Treatment Journey
From planning your hairline to placing each graft, every stage of FUT is carefully designed around your hair characteristics and long-term result.
-
Consultation
Your consultation assesses your hair loss pattern, medical history, donor area and treatment goals to determine whether FUT is suitable for you.
-
Hairline and graft planning
Your surgeon plans the recipient area, expected graft numbers and hairline design to complement your facial features, natural hair characteristics and likely future pattern of hair loss.
-
Donor strip removal
After local anaesthetic, a narrow strip of hair-bearing skin is removed from the donor area, usually at the back of the scalp, before the area is closed using skin clips or dissolvable or absorbable sutures.
-
Graft preparation
The donor strip is carefully divided under the microscope into individual follicular grafts, which contain naturally occurring groups of hairs, helping preserve their quality before transplantation.
-
Graft placement
Small recipient sites are created before the grafts are positioned at carefully planned angles, directions and densities to blend naturally with your existing hair.
-
Aftercare
You can return home the same day. Where skin clips are used, they generally need to be removed approximately 7–10 days after surgery, subject to the surgeon’s instructions.
Surgeon-led FUT care
Dr. Asim Shahmalak has performed hair transplant surgery for more than 20 years following a career in general surgery within the NHS.
He performs all types of hair transplant surgeries, so treatment recommendations are based on your individual hair loss and donor supply rather than a single surgical technique.
Recovery and Hair Growth Timeline
Recovery develops in stages, beginning with early healing before new hair gradually emerges and continues to mature over the following months.
-
First 48 hours
Initial healing
Some tenderness, tightness or swelling may occur after treatment. Protect the transplanted grafts and donor area carefully and follow the sleeping and aftercare instructions.
-
Days 3-10
Gentle cleansing
Small crusts may form around the transplanted grafts as the donor area continues to heal. Follow your washing instructions carefully and avoid scratching or disturbing the recipient area.
-
Around days 10-14
Suture check
Non-dissolvable sutures may need to be removed depending on the closure method used and your individual healing. Your clinical team will advise whether follow-up removal is required.
-
Weeks 2-8
Shedding phase
Some transplanted hairs may shed during this period. This can be a normal part of the post-transplant cycle and does not necessarily mean the follicles have been lost.
-
6-8 months
Early growth
New hairs may begin to emerge from the transplanted follicles. Early growth can initially appear fine, uneven or less dense.
-
12 to 18 months
Visible thickening
Growth generally becomes more noticeable as additional hairs emerge and gradually develop greater thickness, coverage and density.

Frequently asked questions
FUT stands for Follicular Unit Transplantation.
It is also known as strip harvesting or the strip method, because a narrow strip of hair-bearing skin is removed from the donor area and divided into individual follicular grafts under the microscope.
Transplanted follicles are taken from donor areas that are more resistant to pattern hair loss, and can provide long-lasting growth.
However, the non-transplanted hair surrounding them may continue to thin over time.
This is why your treatment needs to be planned around both your current and your possible future hair loss.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic.
You may experience brief discomfort while the anaesthetic is administered, and some tenderness or tightness in the donor area during recovery.
Your clinical team will explain how post-operative discomfort should be managed.
Yes.
FUT leaves a linear scar where the donor strip is removed.
It can normally be concealed by the surrounding hair, although visibility varies according to healing, hair density and how short you wear your hair.
Usually, FUT does not require the whole head to be shaved.
The donor strip area may need to be trimmed so your surgeon can perform the procedure safely. Surrounding hair can often be left longer and used to cover the donor area during recovery.
Your surgeon will explain what will be required in your individual case.
The donor strip is carefully dissected under microscope into individual follicular unit grafts.
These grafts are prepared and then placed into small recipient sites created in the thinning area
The number varies considerably between patients.
It depends on donor density, scalp characteristics, the size of the safely removable strip and the area requiring treatment.
Your surgeon will estimate a suitable graft number after examining your scalp.
Neither technique is universally better. FUE extracts individual follicular units and generally leaves small, scattered marks. FUT removes a narrow strip from the donor area and may allow a larger number of grafts to be transplanted during one session without the need for a full head shave.
Return to work 1-2 weeks after your procedure, once the redness and scabbing have settled. Most patients take 14 days off. Avoid strenuous exercise for about three weeks.
