Your Eyelash Transplant Journey
Every stage is planned around your natural lash line, eye shape and the appearance you want to achieve.
-
Consultation
Your consultation assesses the cause of eyelash loss, medical history, eyelid condition, available donor hair and treatment goals. If transplantation is suitable, your surgeon can estimate the grafts required and discuss treatment costs.
-
Treatment planning
Your existing lashes and areas requiring restoration are assessed carefully. Your surgeon plans the position, angle and direction of each graft to create a natural appearance along the eyelash line.
-
Donor hair preparation
A suitable scalp donor area is selected and treated with local anaesthetic. Donor follicles are then carefully harvested and prepared as individual grafts for transplantation.
-
Eyelash graft placement
The eyelid area is treated under local anaesthetic before individual follicles are carefully placed along the planned lash line, with particular attention to their angle and direction.
-
Immediate aftercare
Some swelling, redness or tenderness may occur around the eyelids after treatment. You will receive guidance on protecting the transplanted follicles and caring for the area during healing.
-
Growth and maintenance
New hairs develop gradually over the following months. Because the transplanted follicles originate from the scalp, the lashes continue growing and require regular trimming and curling.
A Pioneering Eyelash Transplant Surgeon
Dr. Asim Shahmalak performed what Crown Clinic records as the first eyelash transplant in the UK in 2009, treating a young woman from Greater Manchester.
He has since performed eyelash transplantation for patients seeking both reconstructive and aesthetic treatment.
His experience also includes reconstructive work involving people who have lost facial hair following severe injury and acid attacks.
Recovery and Eyelash growth Timeline
From initial healing to visible new growth, your transplanted lashes gradually settle, develop and become more defined over time.
-
First few days
Early healing
The eyelids may feel sensitive, with some swelling, redness, tenderness or bruising. Avoid rubbing the treated area and follow your aftercare instructions.
-
First 1-2 weeks
Settling in
The area continues to heal. Your clinical team will advise when washing, cosmetics and normal activities around the eyes can safely resume.
-
Following weeks
Growth cycle
The transplanted follicles enter their normal growth cycle, so changes in the lashes occur gradually rather than immediately.
-
Around 3-4 months
New Growth
New eyelash growth may begin to appear during this stage. Early hairs can look fine, uneven or develop at different rates.
-
Around 12-18 months
Fuller Appearance
Growth becomes more noticeable as additional transplanted follicles become active. The eyelashes gradually develop greater length, definition and a fuller appearance.

Let’s Take The Next Step
Eyelash transplantation is a highly specialised procedure and suitability cannot be determined from photographs or appearance alone.
Frequently asked questions
The transplanted follicles come from the scalp and are not affected by whatever caused the original lash loss, so they are considered permanent. Because they are scalp hairs, they keep growing and need regular trimming and curling.
From a small area of your own scalp, usually at the back of the head, chosen so the hair is fine enough to suit the lash line. The donor site is treated under local anaesthetic.
The eyelid area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so the procedure itself should not be painful. Some swelling, tenderness or bruising around the eyes for a few days afterwards is normal.
Often yes, provided the eyelid tissue is healthy and there is suitable donor hair. Suitability cannot be judged from photographs, so an in-person assessment is essential.
Suitable patients with naturally sparse eyelashes may consider aesthetic eyelash transplantation to increase density.
The expected improvement and limitations will be discussed during consultation.
Possibly.
Repeated traction or removal of false eyelashes and extensions can sometimes permanently damage natural follicles.
Your surgeon first needs to establish whether the loss is permanent and whether the eyelid is suitable for transplantation.
Yes.
Because the transplanted follicles come from the scalp, they retain scalp hair growth characteristics.
This means the hairs need to be trimmed throughout their lifetime.
Usually, yes.
Scalp hairs do not necessarily have the same natural curvature as eyelashes, so regular curling may be required to help the transplanted hairs blend with your existing lashes and grow safely away from the eye.
