Expert Hair Transplant Surgery by Dr. Shahmalak
Dr. Asim Shahmalak has performed hair transplant surgery since 1999 and has more than 20 years of experience in hair restoration. A former NHS consultant surgeon, he is registered with the General Medical Council and is a member of the British Association of Hair Restoration Surgery.
Every treatment is personally planned to create a result that complements the patient’s natural hairline, facial features and future hair loss pattern.
Your Hair Loss Pattern
Male pattern hair loss can develop in several different ways, from early recession around the temples to more advanced thinning across the frontal, mid-scalp and crown areas.
The Norwood scale illustrates common stages and patterns of male pattern hair loss. During your consultation, your surgeon will assess your current hair loss pattern, donor hair availability and the areas you would like to restore before recommending an appropriate treatment plan.
Recovery and hair growth timeline
Hair transplantation is a gradual process. Recovery and growth vary between patients, but the following timeline provides a general guide
-
First 24 hours
Early Recovery
Some redness, tenderness or mild swelling may be present immediately after surgery. Your clinical team will explain how to protect and care for the newly placed grafts.
-
Days 24-72 hours
Initial Healing
Small crusts begin to form around the grafts. You may be advised to sleep in a semi-upright position to help minimise swelling.
-
Following Weeks
Shedding Stage
Some transplanted hairs may shed during the first few weeks. This is a normal part of the process, and the follicles remain beneath the skin.
-
6–12 Months
Visible Development
Hair growth, thickness and coverage progressively improve. Many patients begin to see the fuller benefits of their transplant during this period.
-
12 Months and Beyond
Mature Results
The transplanted hair continues to mature, thicken and blend with the surrounding natural hair. Some patients may continue to see improvements beyond 12 months.

Frequently asked questions
Hair follicles are usually taken from areas of the scalp that are naturally more resistant to hair loss. Once successfully transplanted, these follicles can continue producing hair for many years. However, existing non-transplanted hair may continue to thin, so your surgeon will consider your likely future hair loss pattern when planning treatment.
Hair transplant surgery is performed under local anaesthetic to minimise discomfort. You may feel some pressure or movement during the procedure, while mild tenderness or tightness can occur during the first few days of recovery.
FUE can be suitable for many men and women with permanent hair loss, but it is not appropriate for everyone. Suitability depends on the cause and extent of hair loss, donor hair availability, age, medical history and expectations.
Not necessarily.
FUT and FUE are different ways of obtaining donor follicles. One may be more appropriate depending on the number of grafts required, your donor supply, scalp characteristics, preferred hairstyle, previous procedures and long-term treatment plan.
A consultation should determine which technique is more appropriate for you.
New growth commonly begins around three to four months after surgery. Hair density and thickness then improve progressively, with more developed results usually becoming visible between six and twelve months. Individual growth times can vary.
The donor area is usually shaved for FUE. Whether any other hair needs to be shaved will depend on the area being treated and will be discussed during your consultation.
You may be suitable if you have permanent hair loss and sufficient healthy donor hair. A private consultation is required to assess your hair loss pattern, scalp condition, general health and expectations before treatment can be recommended.
